Abbot Kinney Festival - 2008

my best friend Lisa, ready to help me sell...

The motely crew of my friends hiding
in the back of the booth...making noise.

The festival was fantastic! The day started out very overcast, but the sun crept out later in the afternoon to smile on us all. Thanks to everyone for coming out and to Lisa, Samir, Scott, David, Danielle, Max, Tram, Ron and Maya...thanks for being there!

I carried parasols this year, which were a big hit! I am going to get a collection of them on the website very soon, since I see that everyone needs a parasol! Especially in the California Sun! The sun is the enemy! Protect your skin with a beautiful parasol and look fetching at the same time! I just love the blue ones.

I also made some headbands and headwraps that flew off the table within hours. these are not on the website yet...but, I hope to have a big selection up and ready by next week, so please check back at
jonesiecake.com

All of the pix here are also in the customer gallery on the website.

A few of my customers are performers, artists, chefs, etc. and have a website of some kind to promote, so I put a link with their picture. Check them out!

P.S. My camera was on some weird setting to focus on what is in the background more than the foreground, so I apologize the pix are not as clear as I would like them to be. Note to self: Check camera settings out before snapping away!

P.S.S. Yes, there was a shooting and it was gang-related. Iit happened after everyone had pretty much left. We are all fine.

When you have over 200,000 people concentrated in a small area and a "hold out gang house" on the street filled with gang members drinking their 40's in the front yard, something is bound to happen. I feel very safe in Venice. There are other elements in the neighborhood, but that is what happens when you live in a city and what makes Venice interesting.

Turns out I knew Adam Pacheco, the young guy who was shot on Sunday. He never struck me as a gang member type, but he was the doorman at our favorite local hangout - The Other Room. He knew me by face and it is very, very sad he is gone now. He always had a smile on his face when I came to the door.

Daily Candy Sold for 125 million

This amazes me.

I get most of my information about the hottest things happening in Los Angeles from
Daily Candy. And, it does not cost me a dime! It's the smartest Internet business I have ever seen. I wrote to Daily Candy 2 years ago to see how much it would cost me to advertise Jonesie Cake on their newsletter. In their busiest month? 34,000$!!! It's amazing!

After buying the company in 2003 for what seemed at the time to be the enormous sum of $3 million, making founder Dany Levy a millionaire, Bob Pitman is now flipping for a $122 million profit.
Not bad for a company that employs just 55 people and relies principally on the delivery method of email.

A simple idea, but the best part is they created a branding by hiring Sujean Rim too illustrate the emails.

The Royal Ascot

The Royal Ascot meeting is undoubtedly one of the racing and social highlights of the British summer. The first recorded reference to Ladies Day, a day the focus switches from racing to fashion, was in 1823. Kind of like "British Kentucky Derby." LOVE IT!

I am currently designing my own version of the butterfly hat!

Project Runway

My guilty pleasure is Project Runway.
I just love this show!

My favorite designer this season is Kenley!

Added October 3rd...What a bitch this girl has turned out to be! I understand that Reality Shows can paint a picture and skew things, but she cannot hide from her words and attitude. She is such a poor sport standing on the runway and making fun of everyone else. It's too bad because I think she has real talent, but she is so full of herself and so nasty...I take back that she is my favorite now.

If you would like to see more of her clothing line...
here is
her website
kenleycollins.com
and her myspace.

Cro Customs

My good friend Caleb Owens has started
a blog for his bike shop
Cro Customs.

Cro Customs Blog

Caleb is another "artist friend" of mine
making way towards doing what he loves.

I love the quote on his website...
"Does Over Time make up for Time Lost?"

I say...Nope.

Go out and turn your love into what you do everyday!
Make something with your hands!

Buy Handmade!

Buying Handmade makes for better gift-giving.
The giver of a handmade gift has avoided the parking lots and long lines of the big chain stores in favor of something more meaningful. If the giver has purchased the gift, s/he feels the satisfaction of supporting an artist or crafter directly. The recipient of the handmade gift receives something that is one-of-a-kind, and made with care and attention that can
be seen and touched. It is the result of skill and craftsmanship that is absent in the world of large-scale manufacturing.

Buying handmade is better for people.

The ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing has left us dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. We are encouraged to be consumers, not producers, of our own culture. Our ties to the local and human sources of our goods have been lost. Buying handmade helps us reconnect.

Buying handmade is better for the environment.

The accumulating environmental effects of mass production are a major cause of global warming and the poisoning of our air, water and soil. Every item you make or purchase from a small-scale independent artist or crafter strikes a small blow to the forces of mass production.
